Temporalmandibular Joint Dysfunction

Applying a Hands-On approach for potential benefits in managing symptoms

A Holistic Approach to TMJ Treatment

Temporalmandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction encompasses a range of conditions affecting the jaw joint and surrounding muscles, often leading to pain, restricted movement, and impaired quality of life. Manual therapy (MT), a hands-on approach used by physical therapists, has been investigated for its potential benefits in managing TMJ dysfunction.

Benefits of Manual Therapy for TMJ Dysfunction

Pain Reduction

MT techniques, including joint mobilizations and soft tissue manipulations, have been shown to alleviate pain associated with TMJ disorders. A systematic review and meta-analysis concluded that MT is effective in reducing pain in the medium term; however, the effect may diminish over time if not combined with therapeutic exercises.

Improved Mouth Opening

Limited mouth opening is a common symptom of TMJ dysfunction. Research indicates that MT can significantly enhance maximum mouth opening (MMO). The same systematic review reported improvements in MMO following MT interventions.

Enhanced Jaw Function

MT applied to the cervical (neck) region has been associated with improvements in jaw function. A systematic review found that cervical MT decreased orofacial pain and improved jaw function in individuals with TMJ disorders.

Long Term Benefits

While MT alone offers benefits, combining it with therapeutic exercises may sustain and enhance these effects over the long term. The aforementioned meta-analysis emphasized the importance of integrating MT with exercises to maintain pain reduction and functional improvements.
